The Tango is a very close hold style of dancing, in which the "Embrace" forms the most important element. The embrace connects the dancers allowing them to feel every nuance made by the other whilst they dance. for the ladies it is a dance of elegance, and style, whilst for the guys it is a dance of, strength, and machismo, deriving as it does from the influnce of the street gangsters [the compadritos] of Buenos Aires.

There is no formal repetitive layout to the dance, [unlike ballroom dancing], there are obviously individual steps but these are strung together by the dancers as they interpret the music, the Tango can therefore be as simple or as complicated as the dancers wish to make it, the Tango is not so much governed by rules, as guided by conventions.

The steps of the Tango are just based on walking, whilst at the same time having a conversation with the other person, and keeping the dance smooth and simple is considered far more desirable, and good mannered than either  trying to over impress, others in the room or your partner.
